New Kiwi book tackles early literacy

New Kiwi book tackles early literacy

Literacy in early childhood education is a hot topic, a nationwide focus that prompted two Auckland women to create a uniquely Kiwi book aimed at early childhood educators, parents and whānau.

As parents and educators themselves, Emma Smoldon and Megan Howell know the importance of early literacy learning. So when they saw a gap in the early childhood sector for a literacy book they did what all good Kiwis do when they see a need: they got stuck in and did the job themselves.

The result is their first book, Ideas for play: Literacy, a fun and colourful resource that is one of only a few books still published entirely within New Zealand, by local publisher Ako Books.

Described as ‘a playful and positive view of learning at its best’ by Wendy Lee, Director of Education Leadership Project (Ltd), Ideas for play: Literacy is set to make a great contribution to the early childhood sector.

Smoldon and Howell describe the book as a straightforward entry to emergent literacy and the real joys of learning through play, offering practical ideas that respond to the literacy learning already happening in children’s day-to-day lives. Written in response to the government and ministry of education focus on Literacy in early childhood, it also weaves the principles of the early childhood curriculum, Te Whaariki, through every page.

Ideas for play: Literacy is intended to make a great contribution to supporting the early childhood sector, parents and families to create literacy rich environments for their children; the first of what is planned to be a series of accessible, practical books.
