Impressive double trophy win for Vidal Legacy

Impressive double trophy win for Vidal Legacy wines at Decanter Asia Wine Awards

One of Hawkes Bay’s oldest wineries has taken out two of the top accolades in the prestigious Decanter Asia Wine Awards.

Vidal Estate has won Regional Trophies for best white and red wines for its Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2012 and Vidal Legacy Syrah 2010. To be awarded a regional trophy, a wine must first win a gold medal then subsequently be judged the best in its region. Vidal Legacy wines were judged the best of the New Zealand wineries entered into the annual competition, currently the largest wine competition in Asia.

More than 40 international wine experts blind tasted over 2,500 entries from around the world looking for the world’s best wines to help consumers make their wine selections.

Vidal Estate winemaker Hugh Crichton says it’s an honour to be recognised at such a renowned competition, particularly for Chardonnay and Syrah, which are both Vidal Estate’s hallmark varietals.

“These results reinforce Hawkes Bay as a producer of top-draw Chardonnay and Syrah of an international standard. The trophies reflect our great soils, climate and how the team focuses on quality from vineyard to bottle.”

Vidal Estate’s Asia market manager Charlotte Read, who lives in Beijing, says the Decanter Asia Wine Awards has an excellent reputation in Asia and winning two trophies exceeded their expectations.

“Wins in wine competitions provide a great springboard from which to communicate with media, trade and consumers, particularly when establishing brand awareness in Asia. China particularly is a rapidly growing market in which wineries around the world are racing to compete. Being awarded these trophies will definitely help Vidal stand out amongst the crowd.”

“There are a huge number of wine competitions that take place in China and after evaluating them all we selected Decanter Asia Wine Awards to enter due to its global reputation, its pan- Asia reach and its ability to help wineries promote their award winning wines after the events.”

Vidal Estate is a part of the New Zealand Wine pavilion at the ProWine wine fair in Shanghai in November and Decanter is coinciding its promotion activity for the medal winners at this event, which will give us a real boost, Read says.

The Decanter Asia Wine Awards aims to recognise quality wines and provide consumers across Asia with a trusted source of recommendations.

“The sole purpose of the DAWA is to recognise and award quality”, says Steven Spurrier,DAWA Co-Chair “Our standards are high, and so are our expectations. We only award medals to wines in which consumers can have the utmost confidence.”
