The common history that New Zealand and Samoa share has its origins from the occupation by New Zealand Forces of German Samoa, one hundred years ago.

Samoan community leader Teleiai Edwin Puni said, “It is a relationship that still has its scars, but one that has come a long way based on friendship, shared values and a common vision for the future.”

“It is also a reminder of the common vision and strong friendship that our forefathers from New Zealand and Samoa expected and hoped for, when they signed the Treaty of Friendship between New Zealand and Samoa in 1962.”

Today nearly 145,000 Samoans call New Zealand home. The impact of Samoans in New Zealand has left an indelible mark on the identity and culture of New Zealand and will continue to do so.

Hon. Peseta Sam Lotu-i’iga, Minister of Pacific Peoples will speak on behalf of the Government of New Zealand. The Consul General of Samoa, His Excellency Faolotoi Reupena Pogi will speak on behalf of the Government of Samoa.

The event will also acknowledge the special relationship between the people of Samoa and Germany pre 1914 prior to New Zealand becoming the protectorate of Samoa.

Completing formalities on the night is a Samoan Ava (kava) Ceremony which is the highest honour in the cultural protocols of Samoa.

Distinguished representatives of the Cooks Islands and Tongan communities will be attending in addition to representatives of Government Agencies, the Private Sector, Pacific Churches and Community Leaders, Pacific Organisations and Pacific Businesses, Pacific Professionals and notable members of the Samoa and Pacific communities across New Zealand.

The Samoa Celebration Ball in on Saturday 15th November at the Pullman Auckland Hotel.
