National Drawing Prize Winner to Exhibit at {Suite} in Wellington

{Suite} is pleased to present Deleted Scenes, an exhibition of recent works by 2014 Parkin Drawing Prize winner, Douglas Stichbury.

Described by judge Gregory O’Brien as ‘a virtuoso piece, a masterclass in monochromatic rendering’, Stichbury’s award winning charcoal drawing, Observer, sparked controversy with claims that the work was a ‘copy’ of a photograph of astronomer Edward Hubble by Margaret Bourke-White.

Since winning the Award Stichbury has, like many artists before him, continued to take inspiration from historically important works of art. His large charcoal drawings and smaller oil paintings for Deleted Scenes depict real and imagined objects lost or redacted from everyday life.

Stichbury completed a Master of Fine Arts with Distinction at Massey University in 2010 and is currently based in Basel, Switzerland. He has participated in artist residencies at Die Weinhalde, Zurich, 2013; Redgate, Beijing, 2014; the International Art Residency, Beijing, 2014; Atelierhaus Salzamt, Linz, Austria, 2015 and Leipzig International Art Programme Residency, Leipzig, Germany (later in 2015).
