Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Appoints New CEO

The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation has today announced the appointment of Shelley McMeeken in the position of Chief Executive Officer.

The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation is a charitable organisation set up by Olympian Sir Murray Halberg (ONZ) in 1963 which aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders by enabling them to participate in sport and recreation.

The work of the Foundation includes a team of Disability Sport Advisers throughout New Zealand who connect physically disabled people to sport and recreation opportunities and deliver No Exceptions Training (NET) - a training package for teachers and sport deliverers on adapting physical activity to include physically disabled people. The Foundation also provides grants to help cover the costs of adaptive sports equipment, lessons and camps.

McMeeken brings a strong commercial background and wealth of management and marketing experience in the sports industry to the position. Her career features multiple senior leadership roles including CEO of Netball New Zealand during one of its most successful eras (1999-2007). She has also been a member on the boards of the 2012 Triathlon World Champs, NZ Football and most recently the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015.

McMeeken has had direct experience with the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation. In 2003 during her tenure as CEO at Netball New Zealand the Silver Ferns swept the Halberg Awards - the Foundation’s major fundraising event - winning the Sportswoman (Irene Van Dyk), Coach (Ruth Aitken), Team and Supreme award categories.

“It’s an honour to be part of an organisation founded by one of New Zealand’s greatest sporting heroes. Sir Murray Halberg along with a board that features some of the country’s most experienced business leaders, have built a charity that is making a huge difference in the lives of people and communities,” says McMeeken.

Founder Sir Murray Halberg says he is extremely proud and privileged to have McMeeken on board. “We look forward to further enhancing our reason for being with Shelley joining our dedicated team.”

McMeeken joins the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation on 28 September, taking over from current CEO Geoff Burgess who has moved into the new role of Endowment Executive at the Halberg Endowment Fund.
