NEW ZEALAND SCHOLARSHIP 2004 TOP SCHOLARS ANNOUNCED
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority is pleased to announce the Top Scholar Awards from the 2004 New Zealand Scholarship examinations.
The Overall Top Scholar is Sarah Thompson from Pakuranga College and Jingwen Mu from Epsom Girls' Grammar is Second Overall Scholar. Sarah and Jingwen gained the best outstanding rankings in their three top Scholarship subjects. For doing so, they receive $15,000 and $10,000 respectively each year for three years to help them pursue higher education in New Zealand.
The Top Scholars in each Scholarship subject have also been announced (see attached list). Each candidate in these subjects will receive $3,000 per year for three years.
As well, a new category has been added to the awards. New Zealand Scholar (Distinction) candidates required outstanding results in three subjects. Four students, Niki Begg and Ryan Manton from Christchurch Boys' High, Alix Boberg from the Diocesan School for Girls, and Thomas Gubb from Whangarei Boys' High have gained this award and will receive $7,500 each for three years.
Features of the awards this year were:
· Three schools produced more than one Top Scholar: Epsom Girls' Grammar (4), St Cuthbert's College (3), and Christchurch Boys' High School (2)
· Of the 32 Top Scholars, 18 came from the Auckland region, with 7 from Christchurch and 2 from Hamilton.
· Sarah Thompson, the overall Top Scholar, is also Top Subject Scholar in English and German.
· Niki Begg is the Top Subject Scholar in Economics as well as being a Distinction Scholar.
Each of the top 32 students will be honoured at a ceremony at Government House on 15 April. Awards will be presented by the Governor General.
The full Top Scholar list and a regional list are attached. The names shown are as the scholars wish to have them on their certificates – some may want the media to use shorter forms of their names. Many of the Top Scholars have agreed to have their personal contact details released to the media. Please call NZQA for this information or for further information about the coming ceremony. Media are welcome at the ceremony. Photos will be available from Friday evening on the NZQA website.
