Budget 2005: Children the winners says New Zealand Kindergartens

The Governments’ goal to make early childhood education more accessible and affordable is to be congratulated. Participation in quality early childhood education provides a strong foundation for children says New Zealand Kindergartens.

Kindergartens are the largest national provider of early childhood education for children aged three to five with an enrolment of some 45 thousand children.

In the budget announcement today, additional funding of up to 18% was announced to cover the higher costs of providing high quality early childhood education along with increases to the income thresholds for childcare subsidies.

“The great strength of Kindergarten has been its accessibility for families and we welcome the extension of access to quality early childhood education for children and their families,” said Karen Boyes, national president of New Zealand Kindergartens.

“We are thrilled the Government is honoring its commitment to the sector and continuing to support the costs associated with employing trained registered teachers as a key component of providing high quality early childhood education for children and their families.”

“The funding gives exciting opportunities for Kindergarten to continue to respond to family needs and for children to be able to experience a dynamic, friendly, learning environment.” she said.
