Student Story: Veronica Hale

MEDIA RELEASE

Veronica Hale
Bachelor of Design (Interior)
Taylor Architects

Veronica Hale chose WelTec’s Bachelor of Design (Interior) because it is New Zealand’s longest running interior design course. Now that she has completed her degree and joined the workforce she has also found out that many employers view it as the one of the best qualifications of its kind.

Veronica started working for Wellington architect Judith Taylor after graduating early in 2006. “I posted my CV on an ArchiCAD [design software] website and was approached about two jobs almost immediately,” says Veronica.

”It’s amazing that I got my dream job as my first job. I wanted to do this since I was a child. I have a thing about creating spaces.

“This is a small company, so I work on everything an architecture graduate does if not more – joinery drawings, specifications, contracts, resource consents. I started right in on a big commercial fitout.”

Veronica says she uses everything she learned at WelTec in her job. “Other people I studied with say the same things. We learned the basics well and don’t have to be re-taught. I’m still learning but I have really good basic skills.

“People in the industry always ask who your tutors were. They are impressed that I’ve been taught by Colin Orcheston. They say that if you’ve had Colin you know what you’re talking about.”

Judith Taylor says Veronica’s preparation has been very good. “WelTec is doing something right. Her easy transition into work is a credit to her training.

“As well as solid skills Veronica has a healthy attitude and confidence. Because of this she is going to professional development courses and I take her to industry events. A junior wouldn’t normally get to do these things.”
