New start for UCOL’s ‘Class of ‘08’

This year’s fresh batch of UCOL students will make a little bit of Wanganui history at Orientation Week next week.

They are the first to study on the new campus on Rutland Street and the first to use the sparkling new facilities.

Staff moved into their new quarters two weeks ago and since then they have been preparing for the new intake. They’re predicting there will be a “Wow!” factor when students get their first glimpse of the bright, modern and airy lecture rooms and laboratories, and modern, wireless student study areas.

UCOL’s Orientation Week starts next Monday 25 February, with an official welcome to new students and staff at a powhiri outside the front entrance to the new Atrium. Students will assemble in the Cosmopolitan Club car park over the road before the start of the powhiri at 1 pm. The ceremony will be followed by refreshments in the Atrium.

Neil Buddle from the student association AS@UCOL says the rest of the week is about having fun, getting to know the new campus and making new friends. He says there will have plenty of opportunity to celebrate the start of the academic year before the hard work ahead. The four lunchtime sessions are also an excellent way of finding out about student support at UCOL, including health services, learning support and the library. Themes around staying healthy while a student will help get the year off to a good start.

Four days’ worth of daily lunchtime entertainment and food starts on Tuesday, with a barbecue sponsored by the National Bank. On Friday the menu changes to pizzas supplied by Domino’s, and other treats free to new and returning students.

Neil says there’ll also be plenty of giveaways and competitions throughout the week.

Local sponsors of Orientation week include ALAC, the National Bank, Domino’s Westpac Trust, BNZ and UCOL.

New students will each receive a special, reusable information bag, with a student calendar and details of local student discounts.

The new campus was blessed by local iwi in a dawn ceremony in early January. It will be officially opened in April.

UCOL O Week ramps up the city

UCOL staff and students share their celebrations with the city, when Orientation Week starts next Monday.

Hang out around King and Princess streets and you can catch some of the excitement as new students, returning students and UCOL staff mark the beginning of another academic year.

According to Wikipedia ‘orientation’ means “determining one’s location in one’s surroundings”. Promotions and Events Team Leader Rachel Penman says a lot of it is about helping students find their feet and get to know the UCOL Palmerston North campus.

“To help that process we give each of them a special, reusable information bag, with a student calendar and details of local student discounts.”

But Rachael and student president Jo Hymers say the week is also about having fun, getting to know each other and letting off steam before the hard work ahead.

“This year we are turning on the best programme yet,” Jo says.” Our dedicated team of savvy individuals has been working tirelessly to make Orientation 2008 at UCOL a really memorable start to the year.”

Jo says there’s something for everybody. “UCOL’ S Orientation Weeks are special. For a start, we’re right in the heart of the city so the community can share the fun. Second of all, we turn on entertainment for both students and staff, young and old. This year, for example, there’s a jazz evening at Modena, with the Bop Cats jazz band. At the other end of the spectrum there’s the traditional pub crawl and rock bands and cricket on the Green at UCOL.”

The theme this year is the ‘80s and Jo expects a big turnout for Kiwiana Day on Wednesday when there’ll be hot food and hot bands and big prizes for a competition for the best dressed ‘class of the ‘80s.”

Jo says the Students Association, AS@UCOL, has received great support from local businesses and organisations, including ZM FM, Domino’s Pizza, Downtown Cinemas, Speights “and heaps of others.”

Market Day opens the week on Monday, with stalls, giveaways and music. On Tuesday students will be officially welcomed on to the campus by senior UCOL staff at a powhiri, followed by the traditional Big Breakfast.

UCOL Wairarapa O Week goes ‘80s

UCOL students dressed in ‘80s gear could be a common sight around Masterton during this year’s Orientation Week.

O Week starts on Monday 3 March with a lunch hour Scavenger Hunt around the UCOL Wairarapa campus, organised by the local student association, AS@U.

AS@U Coordinator Fiona Flis says it’s just the beginning of a series of lunchtime entertainment throughout the week, including giveaways and competitions.

Students who dress up in ‘80s clothes during the week will be up for instant prizes from AS@U judges planted around the campus.

On Friday there will be a Market Day, with stalls, competitions and giveaways, music and input from local banks, gyms and radio stations.

Fiona says in keeping with the week’s theme, there will be an ‘80s Disco on Friday evening, with more details to come.

UCOL Wairarapa will officially welcome new students and staff at a special powhiri at the Whakaoriori marae on Monday 25 February. The powhiri will be followed by a brunch for all students, provided by the student association.
