International Day was celebrated on October 1 at One Tree Hill College, Auckland, with a concert by the Royal New Zealand Navy Band. The function was organised by the Rotary Club of Penrose to mark the establishment of the Penrose Business Association.

The 30-piece band, conducted by Lieutenant-Commander Keith Anderson, performs at school concerts and career expos in addition to providing ceremonial support at royal, vice-regal and state occasions and parades.

This was the first time the band had performed at One Tree Hill College. The event took place in the recently refurbished Marilyn Wales Audition.

Head of music at One Tree Hill College David Naylor said the excellent acoustics of the auditorium made it a great venue for a wide range of concerts.

The Royal New Zealand Navy Band presented a wide range of music including Gershwin’s “Strike Up the Band”, “The Radetsky March”, a Tin Pan Alley medley featuring soloists Craig Simpson and Craig Thompson, Dixieland jazz numbers, the TV theme “Chips” featuring Andy Lile, “Love Changes Everything” featuring vocalist Nathan Shore and an Australian and a New Zealand medley of folk tunes. The guest soloist, the internationally acclaimed saxophonist Brian Smith, performed ‘When I Fall in Love”, “Little Sunflower” and “Tuxedo Junction”.

At the end of the concert Mr Naylor launched the Rotary Club of Penrose Strike Up the Band fundraising project which is asking business houses and individuals to donate concert band instruments to enable a band programme to become a feature of music at One Tree Hill College.
