NZ Schools' Delegation To The Hague in Wellington
Wellington, New Zealand, 1 December 2011 – The
New Zealand Schools' Delegation to The Hague Model United
Nations Conference ('THIMUN') 2012 is converging in
Wellington from the 2nd to the 4th of December for a weekend
of intensive training.
The students, aged between 16 and 18 were selected from across New Zealand to be a part of the prestigious New Zealand delegation, and will be collectively representing the Republic of Malta at THIMUN, debating a wide range of international issues during the week-long international conference as part of an 18-day international study tour across Europe.
The delegates have already been preparing briefing papers, researching their adopted country and learning about diplomacy and international affairs in preparation for their trip. This weekend will be an opportunity for these skills to be put to use and refined through guidance from the directors. The delegates will be holding practice debates on Saturday the 3rd of December, and on the following day they will be visiting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The theme of the conference this year is "Seas and Oceans", which the delegates have found particularly relevant given the recent environmental disasters in the oceans including the oil spills and Rena.
There will be opportunities to interview the delegates as well as the directors who have been organising this trip for the past 10 months. You can find out more about our delegates and the tour through their blog
Notes:
The New Zealand THIMUN
delegation is organised by UN Youth
New Zealand, a non-profit, entirely volunteer
youth-for-youth organisation dedicated towards inspiring
global citizens in the spirit of the United Nations.
The directors of the THIMUN tour are officeholders
of UN Youth New Zealand and were also selected through a
rigorous application
process.
