QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015

New Zealand makes Global Top 10

The fifth edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject published today on TopUniversities.com, features a record-breaking 36 disciplines making it the largest ever ranking of its kind.

The expert opinion of 85,062 academics -who identified the leading institutions within their field and region of expertise -and 41,910 employers who identified the universities that have produced outstanding graduates in a given discipline area - informed the results, alongside the analysis of 17.3 million research papers and 100 million citations (Scopus/Elsevier bibliometric database).

All the New Zealand universities make the global top 400 in at least one discipline.

The best result is achieved by Otago University which ranks 8th in the world for Dentistry followed by Massey University, 15th in Veterinary Science and The University of Auckland, 23rd in Development Studies.

“These rankings provide the most comprehensive global comparison of universities yet at individual subject level,” says QS head of research Ben Sowter. “The world-class performance of the New Zealand institutions reflects their high-impact research and outstanding reputation among an industry-leading sample of global academic experts and graduate employers.”

The University of Auckland ranks top nationally in 31 disciplines – in four instances tied with another university.

Otago University leads locally in four disciplines, The University of Victoria in Wellington and Massey University in two and The University of Waikato in one.

New Zealand universities secured a total of 130 placements across the 36 subjects ranked.

Of these, 30 are new entries for 2015. Compared to 2014, 38 positions have remained the same, 26 positions have improved and 36 have lost ground, in some cases minimally so.

American universities dominate in terms of the number of subjects in which they lead, just as they do in all the global institutional rankings. Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continue to take the lion’s share of top places, leading in 21 subjects between them. However, UK universities have improved their positions overall, with six separate institutions leading in at least one subject.

Fifteen different institutions top at least one of the subjects covered in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2015.
