New Human Resources General Manager

Media Release

Date: 2 May 2007

New Human Resources General Manager

Fiona McCarthy has been appointed Waikato District Health Board human resources general manager.

Ms McCarthy, currently HR general manager at Hutt Valley District Health Board, starts on July 16. She currently manages a team of 17 HR and Health and Safety professionals.

She replaces Etienne Scheepers who left last month for an HR position in Adelaide.

Ms McCarthy said the Waikato appointment was a big move for her professionally and personally.

Waikato DHB has a good reputation both clinically and in HR so the move was a logical one, she said.

Her partner is a senior nurse (critical care) so it was important to consider career opportunities for him as well.

Ms McCarthy was born in the Hutt Valley and has lived there all her life. She started her HR career with New Zealand Rail in the late 1980s during a great period of change.

From there she moved into local government and finally to the Hutt Valley DHB where she worked her way up from being an HR advisor to the role of general manager a year ago.

“It was time to challenge myself more and explore new areas,” she said about the move to Waikato.

Her key areas of interest are practice development and workforce planning.

She believes health needs to be very people focused.

“People make up around 70 per cent of the organisation’s operating costs so that sort of percentage of effort should be put into people.

“Staff are our most important asset and should be treated as such. Staff need to feel satisfied with their work, they need to have opportunities to grow and develop their career.”

Ms McCarthy is a keen scuba diver and will be looking to join a diving club in Hamilton.
