Wairarapa Tops For Baby Immunisations

Media Release

Wairarapa tops for baby immunisations

91% of Wairarapa babies are fully immunised at 12 months

The Wairarapa has topped New Zealand for their work in immunising babies under 12 months.

"Nationally, the rate is 81% of babies are fully immunised at 12 months, and we have achieved a rate of 91%," says CEO David Meates.

"What is even more exciting is the work that has been done with Maori babies – nationally, only 71% are fully immunised at 12 months, but here we have reached 94%. It's a fantastic achievement, and a credit to the hardworking teams and parents who understand the importance of immunisation."

"Our immunisation programme is lead by a well informed group of nurses," says Felicity Marriott, District Immunisation Facilitator.

"It starts in Maternity where new mums first learn about and have to make decisions regarding immunisation. It carries on through to the Practice nurses, Plunket nurses, and Well Child nurses. Their work is supported by Immunistaion Outreach staff, who work with the Maori Women's Welfare League to reach families who may have little contact with mainstream health services. Our wrap-around services are completed with the help of the Public Health nurses, who work alongside families in schools."

"I think the key to the Wairarapa's success is the group of experienced, knowledgeable people who are committed to the people they care for," says Felicity. "They are all willing to help each other out to ensure our families have access to healthcare."

The District Health Board lists the health of children and young people as one of its health priorities. "Achieving a result like this is great news for our district," says CEO David Meates.

"Yet again, we see that by many agencies working together, we can make a real difference to the health of our population."
