Forum Brings Pacific community Together

25 July 2007

Importance of translating research key focus of Pacific health research forum

Translation of research is the key theme of the Pacific Health Research Forum 2007 hosted by the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC).

The Forum will bring the Pacific community together in Auckland, from 1 to 2 August, to strengthen relationships among people in the research, policy, community and practice sectors.

The two day programme is based around four key discussion topics; policy that works for Pacific people, Pacific translation of knowledge, participation of communities in research and celebrating Pacific health outcomes.

The Forum brings with it a wide variety of exciting speakers from the Pacific, health and research communities. Sir Barry Curtis, mayor of Manukau City, is guest speaker at the Forum celebrity breakfast on day two.  Sir Barry has been the mayor of Manukau since 1983, making him New Zealand’s longest-serving mayor.

Cook Islands Deputy Prime Minister Sir Terepai Maoate and Invercargill GP and surgeon, Dr George Ngaei, will be speaking at the Forum in place of the late Sir Thomas Davis who passed away on 24 July 2007.

The Pacific Health Research Forum 2007 will be held at Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre in Auckland.

The Forum is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Counties Manukau DHB, ProCare Health Ltd, Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), Manukau City Council, the Families Commission, Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand, Sanitarium, Pacific Information, Advocacy & Support Services Trust, Waiwera Mineral Water, the National Heart Foundation (Pacific Islands Heartbeat Programme), Te Pou: The National Centre of Mental Health Research and Workforce Development and Air New Zealand Cook Islands.
