Maori nursing students gather at UCOL Wairarapa

UCOL Wairarapa is hosting a four day conference for Maori nursing, at Hau Ariki Marae.

The conference runs from today Thursday 21 May until Sunday 24 May.

The conference is facilitated by Te Kaunihera o nga Neehi Maori (Maori Nursing Council). Students from all over New Zealand are attending the conference to discuss Maori education, nursing and health issues.

The theme for the conference is Whakatutuki Nga Wawata (desires and aspirations for Maori) with supporting threads Tangata Rongonui (who are/were these great people) and Hauora Maori (Maori health).

Guest speakers include representatives from the Ministry of Health and Te Puni Kokiri, retired registered nurses, Nursing graduates from UCOL and local Maori health agencies.

There will be examples of best practice on display at the hui with prizes for those that stand out.

UCOL Wairarapa Nursing Lecturer, Gene Lewis-Clarke, who coordinated the conference, says the students provide encouragement and support for each other throughout their studies and continue with these networks throughout their careers.
