More parking and easier access to the Emergency Department is on the cards for Waikato Hospital with a second carpark building (pictured right) to open later this year on Pembroke Street.
Foundation and piling works are almost complete for the five-level building that will hold 218 vehicles and a cafe.
It is the second carpark building for the Waiora Waikato Campus, taking the total parking spaces for patients and visitors to almost 900.
Building Programme director Ian Wolstencroft said the DHB awarded Fosters Construction Ltd the $7.7million contract last year for their user-friendly design and build solution.
“The feedback we received from the first carpark building was a major contributing factor to the design.
“The Pembroke Street Carpark Building will have wider entry and exit ramps that exceed legal requirements and more space for vehicles to move in and out of parks,” Mr Wolstencroft said.
The building will also have one set of elevators that stop at each level.
Fosters started work late last year and commercial manager Leonard Gardner is looking forward to delivering on the project.
“The selection of Fosters demonstrates the DHB’s leadership in supporting local business and we are grateful for that.
“The carpark is an important part of the hospital and Fosters is pleased to be able to contribute to the Waikato’s wellbeing in this way,” Mr Gardner said.
The Pembroke Street Carpark Building is a resource consent requirement to ensure sufficient parking spaces are provided at the hospital when four wards above the new ED open later this year.
Mr Wolstencroft said the completion of the Pembroke Street building in November and the Meade Clinical Centre in 2013 will result in improved access for visitors to all areas of the hospital.
“The main campus carpark building will provide direct and easy access to clinics in the clinical centre from 2013, and the Pembroke Street Carpark Building will be well-placed for patients and visitors to the Emergency Department and hospital wards,” he said.
