Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite!

Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite!

First an international rugby game, now Christmas looming – is your mattress protected for unexpected guests, and what will happen if it’s not?

These are questions we should all be asking following news of a plague of bed bugs as reported in the New Zealand Herald, showing that exterminators are now doubling their work and hotel staff are being trained to spot the pests. So, how do we stay safe from this roaming menace?

“As in all things, prevention is better than the cure,” says David Kaplan CEO of Protect-A-Bed®, manufacturer of the world’s best-selling mattress protectors. Because your only option is to call in a professional to eradicate them, a mattress protector will save a lot of time and money by stopping bed bugs spreading in the mattress and base. It’s also a totally pesticide-free alternative.

Protect-A-Bed's mattress encasements are scientifically proven to be an effective tool in the management of a bed bug infestation and are certified by an Entomology Laboratory to be bed bug entry and escape proof. One product known as AllerZip® is also proven to be bite-proof.

Protect-A-Bed® has developed a revolutionary protection tool that is backed by a unique barrier technology; a breathable waterproof barrier to stains, bacteria and allergens coupled with Buglock® - that true to its name; locks out bugs. BugLock® with Secure Seal features a 3 sided zipper system with micro-zipper teeth designed to prevent bed bugs from weaving their way through the closed and locked zippers.

Two options are available; Fit & Forget™ and AllerZip®.

A range of other protector products are available to ensure the optimum sleep environment and the company’s latest innovation; the Healthy Sleep Zone Solution range includes products to cater to sleep-related health concerns including:

• Bedwetting and incontinence

• Dust mite and bed bugs

• Allergies – asthma, hay fever and skin disorders

• General hygiene issues including mums-to-be and pets-on-beds

We spend one-third of our lives in bed and there is no better protection for your mattress than Protect•A•Bed's allergy & bedbug control bedding products. Especially when you take into account that we lose on average one litre of moisture every night via perspiration and bodily fluids and shed around 2 million skin flakes while sleeping. Remembering that a mattress is a big investment for most people, it’s worth spending a little bit extra to make sure you, your family and your guests are safe and comfortable.

How to check for bed bugs

- They are easy to see. Adult bed bugs are the size of an apple seed with reddish-brown oval bodies.

- They leave blood spots and stains on the mattress.

- They shed their skins as they grow so a light-brown exoskeleton shell is a nasty reminder they are there.

- Run your finger along the mattress seam checking for dark brown spots.

- Dresser drawers, bed heads and upholstered chairs should also be checked.

How to avoid bringing any unwanted bed bugs home with you

- Keep your suitcase off the floor and double-check contents for any infestation. You have the chance of picking up bed bugs in the most premium accommodation as well as in the worst.

- Check travel information websites for other guest’s possible bedbug experiences and if you find some, let the management know immediately.

- Wash clothes in the hottest water and vacuum the inside and outside of your suitcase.
-
Whether you’re a guest in someone else’s house, or having guests at your own, protecting yourself should be just one of the things on your checklist this summer.

Fit & Forget™ and AllerZip® are available from Harvey Norman nationally. AllerZip is also available at leading bedding retailers.
