Te Whare O Matairangi Reopens

On Monday July 2 Capital & Coast District Health Board reopens Te Whare o Matairangi (Ward 27) after a $7.8 million refurbishment of the ward which involved extensive consultation with consumers and community groups, clinical staff, administrators, and managers.

Te Whare O Matairangi is a mental health inpatient unit which provides services for people who are too unwell to be at home. The focus for treatment at the unit is on recovery and returning to everyday life in the community.

The 14 month project has resulted in a new layout where the 29 bed unit is divided into two main sections; an acute side (locked area) and an open side (unlocked area). There are separate areas for males and females in both sections, particularly in the sleeping areas and lounges. There are also shared areas for more communal activities.

The completed refurbishment increases the ward floor area by 1000 sq metres. While the bed numbers remain the same the extra space has enabled us to design a much improved environment and facility for consumers, families, visitors and staff.

During the renovations staff and clients were relocated to the Ratonga Rua-o-Porirua campus at Kenepuru Hospital

Te Whare O Matairangi will be opened at 2pm by Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne.
