“Let's Talk About Breast”

“Let's Talk About Breast”

Breast cancer is New Zealand’s third most common cancer and accounts for more than 600 deaths every year.

In 1985 began the breast cancer awareness campaign to encourage women to have x-ray exam of the breast (mammograms). Early detection means that the cancer can be more effectively treated and prevented from spreading to other areas of the body.

Some women are at greater risk of breast cancer because there is a history of close family members having the disease. However, most women who develop breast cancer have no relatives with the disease. Even among women who do have relatives with breast cancer, most will never develop it. Therefore, it is paramount to ensure routine mammograms are carried out. In New Zealand, women aged 45 to 69 years are eligible for publicly funded Mammography

Unfortunately, the uptake is not consistent among Asian populations, according to the Waitemata District Health Board. Beside that amongst all the population reside in Waitemata, Maori women have significantly higher breast cancer mortality rates than non-Maori/non-Pacific women.

To ensure the key message is to be continued and raised in the community. The Public Fitness and Wellbeing Trust are running a Zumbathon and raising funds. This is an opportunity for mothers, sisters, daughters and friends come and celebrate the life of their loved one on the 18th Oct 2014 at the Massey University, Albany, Recreation Centre. Ticket only $10 per person and all funds raised will be donated to the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.
