Sir Mason Durie to visit Nelson

New Zealand professor of Māori Studies and research academic at Massey University, Professor Sir Mason Durie (Rangitane, Ngāti Kauwhata) is coming to Nelson this month to address the South Island Occupational Therapists on ‘practising appropriately for bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand’.

Sir Mason has been at the forefront of a transformational approach to Maori health for over 40 years. He has made, and continues to make, an enormous contribution to Māori health in New Zealand.

NMDHB Director Allied Health, Hilary Exton says it is quite a coup securing Sir Mason.

“We are extremely fortunate to have been able to secure Sir Mason for the Occupational Therapists’ study day,” she says.

Hilary says his visit coincides with the launch of the Occupational Therapy Boards new competency document and ePortfolio platform which records professional development.

“The new competency document strongly emphasises practicing appropriately in bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand so Sir Mason’s presentation will be a great learning opportunity for occupational therapists across the district.”

Sir Mason KNZM FRSNZ FRANZCP is a Senior Advisor to Te Rau Matatini, and is known for his contributions to Māori health. As Deputy Chair of Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Professor of Māori Research and Development, and more recently Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Massey University he provides national academic leadership for Māori and indigenous development and regularly assists Iwi and Māori communities to realise their own aspirations for socio-economic advancement.

The Occupational Therapy district-wide study day is on 23 March the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s seminar centre on the Braemar Campus. The study day is open to Occupational Therapists and other allied health professional by invitation.

The day is being jointly funded by the Nelson Marlborough DHB with support from the Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand and the professional association Occupational Therapy New Zealand.
