Tuia Te Ao Marama: Māori Nursing History Online
The
first Oral History website of Māori nurses who practiced in
mental health services between 1950 to 1990 was launched at
Whatu Kaimarie, Māori Health Services in Auckland. The
website is a resource that will ensure the history,
knowledge and experiences of Māori Nurses is preserved for
future generations.
Developed by a group of Māori nurses with the College of Mental Health Nurses (New Zealand) who video interviewed 15 Māori. Each video interview provides a rich narrative (in both English and Te Reo Māori) within a resource that highlights vivid impressions of Māori.
Guest speaker Dr Nepia Mahuika who opened the launch acknowledged Tuia Te Ao Marama as an invaluable collection of experiences of Māori. The launch ended with a presentation of video clips of interviewees who offered a range of perspectives about psychiatric institutions of old, the development of Māori health services, words of motivation and Te Reo Māori.
