Images by Selwyn Manning – Scoop co-editor, on assignment in New York.

Photo Essay: Greenwich Village, New York, remains one of the most popular precincts on Manhattan Island. It still holds on to its rather Bohemian, folk lifestyle, and is bordered by New York University. It is a folk and rock historian's Mecca with names like Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix having penned and played some of their most famous work here.

NYPD: A quiet place to take time-out to file reports… The area surrounding Sullivan St. Thompson and Bleecker streets is all fairly safe and has held on to is folk/jazz vibe. Today too it is rich in 21st century New Yorker culture, a popular meeting place before heading further downtown. Here there is just the occasional drunk in the late of the night.

Le Figaro Café: was a popular folk music location in the 1960s. Here you can sample offerings from a great menu (the cheese burger and salad is pretty good) and enjoy jazz brunch on weekends, also features belly-dancing on Sundays!

Five minutes into the trip, I realised I was sitting in the 'hit-seat' – that's the rear-right seat for those who haven't read the 'Dapper Don' John Gotti's exploits. But at 60 miles per hour (115 kph) and with the signs for Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan (and other vehicles) blurring passed the vehicle I realised speed would save me from a bullet. See...
