Live Rock Band Kicks Off The Hailwood Show

Fashionz.co.nz: Live Rock Band Kicks Off The Hailwood Show

Hailwood - A live rock band kicked off the Hailwood show this afternoon, setting the mood for a collection that effortlessly combined sexy glamour with street appeal.

Entitled "Mean Street", the collection saw less denim that previous years, and designer Adrian Hailwood opted for more relaxed, loose fitting pants as opposed to his signature narrow leg. Denim was found in the form of straight leg jeans for guys and a stylish high-waisted mini for girls.

Suiting featured man-stye pants belted at the waist, and vests worn over tees with Hailwood's music-inspired prints, such as a large silver music note on a peach t-shirt.

Black, grey and silver metallics were mainstays of the colour palette, with hints of navy, sky blue and peach. Stripes were a feature, looking best on wearable lightweight knits perfect for layering under frocks and vests.

I loved the way Adrian played with volume throughout – bat-wing sleeves, collars which ensembled capes, and oversized pockets featuring large buttons. Favourites included a simple black dress with tulip sleeves and a wide neckline which fell loosely on the body, a navy striped casual hooded dress which fell below the knee, and – top of my 'winter to buy list' – a pale peach anorak with an large hood and narrow rope tied around the waist.

For the true fashionistas out there, there were black high-shine vinyl coats and silver overalls.

Shoes were also designed by Hailwood – patent black and grey lace-ups with chunky heals worn with opaque tights. Models were adorned with the largest eyelashes I've ever seen – which made me wonder if they were struggling to keep their lids open to see the catwalk!

Post show, Adrian explains inspiration for the collection was drawn from a 1920's R. Steiner dress. The frock was created for a dance troupe and was "very flowy and roomy" – which can also be said about his Winter 2008 range.
