Strong
Words: North Korean Human Rights Situation - "We
will continue to work for the day that North Koreans are
free. That is our policy. As President Bush said in Prague
this June: "People living in tyranny need to know they are
not forgotten. North Koreans live in a closed society where
dissent is brutally suppressed, and they are cut off from
their brothers and sisters to the south… My message to all
those who suffer under tyranny is this: we will never excuse
your oppressors. We will always stand for your freedom." More

Burmese Monks Step Up Pressure On Military Junta -
Demonstrations by hundreds of Burmese Buddhist monks were
staged yesterday in central and upper Burma. The protests
are a warning to the Burmese generals that the monks will
refuse daily donations from the families of military
personnel commencing on Tuesday, September 18, 2007. The
junta violently cracked down on monks peacefully protesting
in Pakokku on September 5, 2007. More

Mohammad
Reza Razavi:How Much For A Kidney? How Much A
Grave? - Recently I read an interesting article
about Iranian security forces discovering a tunnel that
apparently lead to the British Embassy in Iran. I found the
whole affair extremely interesting, not so much because of
the cloak and dagger stuff, but because the Iranian
authorities among other things, accused the Brits of using
the tunnel to bring in prostitutes into the embassy... More

Collins: Attorney General Mukasey and the Rule of
Law - Attorney General nominee, Judge Michael B.
Mukasey was under FBI protection for 11 years due to threats
after presiding over major terrorist trials. Commenting on
the FBI’s decision to end protection even though some
safety concerns remained, the judge said, “I’m not
complaining. I rather like it, being normal.” A review of
his legal history portrays Judge Mukasey as a highly
intelligent and capable jurist who stands his ground and
displays sympathy for the underdog... More

Barker: Images - 360 @ 7 On Washington's Mall -
Perhaps to make up for the fact that all its public
memorials glorify revolutionaries, warmongers and war dead,
DC tries hard to emphasize culture as well. Central to this
effort is the National Mall, a broad pedestrian avenue that
stretches from the Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial,
with the Washington Monument about halfway along its
length... More

Weiner: 2008 Election: Confusion, Anger, Hope...
- Let's construct a pair of binoculars out of two quotes.
What we see may help us understand more clearly our current
reality and where it could take us in November 2008. Seen
through the right ocular is this doozy by former Secretary
of State Henry Kissinger; it's from another era (the
early-1970s, to be exact), discussing the socialist
government of Salvador Allende in Chile prior to the
military coup that toppled his government... More
