A Tsunami measuring 0.04 metres has been recorded near Vanuatu. The threat assessment for New Zealand however remains as previously indicated; it is not expected to be destructive for New Zealand however we still advise people on the West Coast from Northcape to Hokitika and on the East Coast from Northcape to Auckland to stay clear of beaches and out of the water as well as refrain from boating activities due to expected strong currents until a cancellation is issued. Pacific Quakes: Potential Tsunami Threat To NZ

MCDEM issued a Potential Threat Advisory to New Zealand following the Magnitude 8.0 earthquake that occurred in Vanuatu today at 1117NZDT. The magnitude has since been revised to 7.8. There is no confirmation that a tsunami has been generated. Our advice from scientific advisors is that if a tsunami has been generated it is unlikely to be destructive for New Zealand. However, the Potential Threat Advisory remains in effect until cancellation. More>>

Evaluation

It Is Not Known That A Tsunami Was Generated. This Warning Is Based Only On The Earthquake Evaluation. An Earthquake Of This Size Has The Potential To Generate A Destructive Tsunami That Can Strike Coastlines Near The Epicenter Within Minutes And More Distant Coastlines Within Hours. Authorities Should Take Appropriate Action In Response To This Possibility. This Center Will Monitor Sea Level Data From Gauges Near The Earthquake To Determine If A Tsunami Was Generated And Estimate The Severity Of The Threat.

Estimated Initial Tsunami Wave Arrival Times At Forecast Points Within The Warning And Watch Areas Are Given Below. Actual Arrival Times May Differ And The Initial Wave May Not Be The Largest. A Tsunami Is A Series Of Waves And The Time Between Successive Waves Can Be Five Minutes To One Hour.
