Uighur political
groups have always supported peaceful Uighur nationalism and
independence. However, the Chinese government has often
referred to Uighur nationalists as terrorists and received
more global support for its claims since 9/11.
This year
Barack Obama ordered the release of four Uighurs from the
military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, but a Chinese
court has just handed down death sentences to six men for
their involvement in a riot in the far north western region
of Xinjiang.
Kim talks to Rebiya Kadeer about her amazing
life and what the future holds for the Uighur people, during
Kadeer's visit to New Zealand on invitation by the Green
Party.
Rebiya Kadeer is speaking through a translator -
Alim Seytoff. For time purposes some of her words have been
edited - but the translations are in full.
