Kiwis Have Their Say On Ultra Fast Broadband - 5
Why New Zealanders want an ultra-fast broadband network.
Every week, we will bring you a selection of comments from Vector’s fibre to the door website.
Here’s what Kiwi’s have had to say this week in support of Vector’s effort to bring fibre to the door of Aucklanders...

Because NZ needs any competitive advantage it can get; being on the bottom rung of the world. We need to be able to attract further IT talent, and keep them in our shores. We need to be able to compete with large film studios overseas. The future is not a metal that corrodes quickly, that was first installed 100 years ago to many of our houses; that's the past. The future is in light...on fibre optic.

IT consultantI can see that having faster broadband will definitely enhance our trading and economy. On top of that it will greatly improve our experiences with web based applications, that in some cases we have become so dependant on. As a student studying towards a degree in computer science, with the view of being as professional web designer and developer, this will enhance my goal.

University studentAdvertisement - scroll to continue readingInternet in New Zealand has always been behind the times. When I go to China and Japan I always love the fast speeds, when I get back, I feel like I'm on dial up again. New Zealand needs to keep up with the rest of the world in terms of technology. We need a proper speed and usage amount.
LC
StudentI live in a rural area where broadband is poor with only one provider to use. Telecom has stated we are not close enough to their exchange. The speed of the wireless broadband available at home is not good. NZ is so far behind world standards it's embarrassing and unfair to New Zealanders.
ELWe need it to be able to negate our isolation. Technology is the way of the future. This is a major part of that future.

Graphic designerBecause 10Mb download and 1.5Mb upload is to slow! I want at least 20Mb up & down with no lag!

Registered electricanBecause New Zealand is 5 years behind other developed countries with regard to its current internet speeds.

DesignerFaster internet means better contact with my family abroad and brings us more in-line with the rest of the world.
KdSBecause where I live I get between 14Kbs and 26.4Kbps, no broadband is available. Rural NZ is stuck in last century.

Graduating studentNZ's world rating for broadband speed is slipping as other countries implement fast broadband. A study done by (Lewis, P, 2004) on South Korea suggested they think of broadband as a basic utility like water and power. Korea network bandwidth is 20MBperSecond compared to US of 2MBperSecond. Source: Lewis, P. (2004). “Broadband Wonderland”. Fortune, September 20, 51-55.

AuditorOur whole business ($10mill/mth) is totally throttled by the poor and limited copper cable delivering terribly slow internet. Telecom say there is nothing they can do, as there is not enough copper in the ground in our area. Curious as fibre line is within 1 km of us. We need a better solution urgently.

MDIt is refreshing to see there was a company out there with the vision and foresight to lay dark fibre in anticipation broadband needs here in New Zealand. It sees, at times, Kiwi’s have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into the future. . I would often see roadworks everyway and wondering why no one is laying fibre optic cable, even if nobody needs it yet. Instead of taking advantage of all the construction and essentially laying the fibre for free now New Zealand will have to pay twice. This will go down as one of those historical missteps. The mis-teps include: After WWII the US offered to build a road running the length of New Zealand (including a bridge to the South Island which was nixed since nobody needed that much road way). The Harbour Bridge, whose original plans was eight lanes was scaled back, again because nobody though they would need that many lanes. Now vector has the vision to lay fibre optics and once again New Zealand is saying that nobody will ever need it. This lack of vision needs to stop. New Zealand is not a small country. New Zealand is just as large as Japan and will be an economic powerhouse if we just have vision.
TBBecause I want fast broadband 24/7 without capped download speed. I think that New Zealand has the opportunity to join the forefront of world technology and should jump at the chance.

French teacherWe need to get real broadband in this country has been pathetic for long enough! A change to fibre is a change to a better future for New Zealand broadband users not only for business but for the wider community!
KJIt is the future. All our work depends on efficiency of the internet. Slow broadband means slow work and low productivity.

TeacherIt is really important for both researching for my business and also to take full advantage of the new technological advances with regards to creating my business website. If my customers have slow internet they can't take full advantage of my website.

Business ownerJust loading this survey took me three attempts at refreshing the page and one disconnection. Please bring us broadband that is both fast and stable.
VTIt should not be the characteristic of a first-world country like New Zealand to have slow, limited and expensive internet connections. Each and every New Zealander should have access to advanced and sophisticated technology for us to progress further.

AnalystWe need to move forward and keep up with the world. If there is better faster broadband why not bring it to us. It would be highly beneficial for many off us. Students, business and homes.

Distribution supervisorLet's make our investment really count and get performance that really enhances our ability to work efficiently. Effective communication is important in today’s busy world for both business and education. Let's get the best possible option and do the job properly.

Airline pilotI study via correspondence, streaming lectures and uni website uses a lot of bandwidth. fibre to the door should make it cheaper

StudentI support this because my download speeds are 0.6 kb per second. That’s almost 100 times slower than dial up. We need fibre optics.

I rely on the internet for my business and the service I am currently able to access is pathetic at best and appalling for most of the time. I am VERY keen to have a fibre optic service (I live in Takapuna) so it can't happen soon enough for me. I hope I am not kept waiting for too much longer
JAI'm tired of having slow broadband and ridiculous monthly caps. When I was in Queenstown I was fortunate to be connected to the KAREN research network, fibre all the way from where I was back to my office in Auckland. It was as fast as being there. Literally. It was amazingly easy to work remotely, unlike over my existing broadband.

ITEveryone wants fast and reliable service, I believe Vector can do the job and do it well

Crown Lift TrucksBecause within a few years - certainly the time it will take to roll out fibre-to-the-door - we will all be dependent to a greater or lesser extent on applications in the cloud. This will make faster broadband a necessity

The Government plans to give New Zealand a complete fibre to the door ultra-fast broadband network. Vector thinks that’s a great idea and is hoping to help them do it and Scoop.co.nz also thinks its something well worth discussing.
