Kiwis Have Their Say On Ultra Fast Broadband - 7
Why New Zealanders want an ultra-fast broadband network.
Every week, we will bring you a selection of comments from Vector’s fibre to the door website.
Here’s what Kiwi’s have had to say this week in support of Vector’s effort to bring fibre to the door of Aucklanders …..
We had some friends from France stuck here in NZ for a bit over a week because their flight was delayed due to the ash cloud. They reminded us of how backward our network was by firstly asking if we where our dial up (we are on the fastest ADSL plan available to us) since they had great delays and numerous retries accessing VPN and RAS into their work sites. Then using up all our bandwidth as there are no limits on amount of data accessed and downloaded.

Communications EngineerImproved speed of data transmission at my place of work would be hugely beneficial. The current ability to obtain radiological images from other hospitals is poor because files take so long to download. Connection to web based technology for research purposes is decidedly pedestrian, and time wastage on simple projects could be greatly reduced if better bandwidth was possible.

DoctorHigh speed internet is the new fundamental utility of our times. We can't even predict yet all the massive social and economic advantages it will bring. The sooner we get it for everyone, the less we'll be left behind as a nation.

Computer ProgrammerAdvertisement - scroll to continue readingIt's imperative that NZ have a broadband service similar to the rest of the developed world to have a chance of being competitive and able to communicate better globally.

Cardiac SonographerAs a business we need the best internet in the world. This is because I need to download and upload huge documents all day everyday. As well as communicating with other businesses overseas reliably. It is such an embarrassment New Zealand seen as one of the worst broadband on the OECD.
KYL
Business OwnerFaster downloads and uploads means I am better able to interact with my fellow students and lecturers online - this is important as I am completing a distance course and slow internet speeds often hamper our ability to have real time discussions. I also enjoy online computer gaming and, as I live in central Auckland with pretty fast internet, I know the value of high speed internet. Having lived in South Korea I also know the overall benefits to efficiency, time saving and convenience that fast internet presents. It is also part of being a first world country and technologically advanced and progressive economy. The world is online and we need to be too.

Auckland University masters studentNew Zealand broadband was good 10 years ago but now its overloaded and needs a big upgrade I think that going the way of fibre optics will be just the upgrade needed.
CY
WOF Inspector/MechanicI live for the internet and the faster I can live the better.
JasonInternet is the way of the future and will become much more important in the coming years - you cannot ignore this. Hesitating on investing in what will be/is an integrated part of most Kiwis’ lives is not a forward thinking or smart approach. Rather, it would be a HUGE backward step out of sync with the direction of the rest of the developed world.

StudentHaving true high speed broadband is the only way to ensure that we have access to all the internet has to offer and will allow NZ to move to be a "knowledge" economy.
SGFaster broadband connection... less frustration!

Early Childhood Teacher/ManagerAs a gamer the speed of my connection is very important as the saying goes an online gamer is only as good as their internet connection.

Internet SpecialistWe use our computer to keep in touch with family, both in NZ and South Africa. That is why we got our computer when we both left work. We may be old, but we do need to keep up with modern techniques. We are still learning though, so anything new will be wonderful.

RetiredI believe we are so far behind in the world of the internet, Korea has the fastest internet in the world, and it's also way cheaper than what we pay for here. Everyone deserves fast internet!
ASNew Zealand is a small country and needs to be able to differentiate itself. Having a really good infrastructure enabling New Zealanders to sell to the world and communicate with the world effectively is to my mind the best way of enabling the New Zealander DIY attitude to make this country a much better and wealthier country.

ITThis would allow the ability to work from home to claim back about 2 hours of commuting time each day, greatly increasing the quality of life and increasing productivity.

Architectural GradBecause fast internet makes my life easier to balance everything. I can complete my work and still have time to enjoy my favourite shows when I miss them - and don't have to sit and get annoyed when delayed/loading/freezing of video on demand. The quicker the better, I've loved it when I have used it in the States and it is frustrating that we are still so slow.
AB
SalesBecause I believe in the future and a lot of information needs to be obtained via internet. This means, if our internet is lost for a few minutes or there are poor connections, we would be disadvantaged by not getting enough information like some other countries do. Nowadays, university researches are mainly base on information obtained from e-resources, like articles from e-journals (environmental free!) and now communications via internet are increasing…and will increase in the future. If we do not have enough communication…then there are some psychological effects on our population. I have lectures nowadays via satellite...like connection from one campus to another…so all students can see and listen to the lecture at the same time across NZ. This is time saving and efficient…however, we sometimes experience technical problems...I reckon if our internet is fast enough, the quality of our learning will be better...

IHC Worker/University StudentNew Zealand is missing out on what the world has to offer. Fibre connectivity will open new avenues for the budding innovators to explore. We can come up with some really hi-tech solutions that cater to the ever changing business demands. Let’s step up the game.

The Government plans to give New Zealand a complete fibre to the door ultra-fast broadband network. Vector thinks that’s a great idea and is hoping to help them do it and Scoop.co.nz also thinks its something well worth discussing.
