Protocols of the Red Crystal Explained

MPs have sent the Geneva Conventions (Third Protocol—Red Crystal Emblem) Amendment Bill to the Foreign Affairs Committee with out dissent.

This bill enables New Zealand to implement the Third Protocol relating to the adoption of an additional distinctive emblem - the Red Crystal - for use alongside the Red Cross and the Red Crescent.

The protocol has been awaiting ratification since 2006 and the bill itself a first reading since 2010.

Tony Ryall on behalf of Foreign Minister Murray McCully said the bill deserved support.

Earlier the Prisoners’ and Victims’ Claims (2012 Expiry and Application Dates) Amendment Bill passed into law by 103 to 17 with Greens, Maori Party and Mana opposing

The House adjourned at 5pm and will sit again in two weeks time.
