PM Post-Cab Conference: Flag Shortlist, Business Confidence

The Prime Minister today announced that the shortlisted flags for the flag referendum will be announced at 10am Tuesday.

Speaking at his Monday post-cabinet press conference, John Key said there were two or three flags he would personally vote for in the shortlist. He said the chosen flag would be instantly recognizable as a representation of New Zealand.

Key stood by the process of the flag panel and referendum. He said a YouTube video on the Flag Consideration had garnered over 700,000, demonstrating New Zealander’s interest in the proposed change.

Regarding the ANZ Business Outlook released on Monday showing business confidence is down, Key said the problem is in their mind. He said the 2-3% growth forecast shows the economy is steadily growing.

Key responded to questions about Jetstar’s announcement of a regional flights program today saying there would be no immediate change in the travel arrangements of public service transport. He said there would be review of the arrangements in 2016 and Jetstar would be welcome to bid.

Key said putting IRD registration on houses for New Zealanders would lead them to think there would be a stealth tax.

On the refugee quota, Key said he welcomed a review but stood by the current protocol for providing assistance to recent emigres. He said he would consider a change if the standard provided could accommodate 1000 refugees.
