Electing A Speaker

MPs are scheduled to elect a new Speaker when Parliament sits at 2pm today.

The incumbent Lockwood Smith is standing down to take up the High Commissioner role in London.

David Carter is expected to be the only nomination from National and is therefore highly likely to take the position.

Labour and the Greens have expressed displeasure about the nomination process.

After this and Question Time, MPs will return to the debate on the Prime Minister’s statement with three hours and 33 minutes remaining in the 15 hour debate.
