Unusual Private Bill Sent To Select Committee

An unusual private bill covering issues around parenthood and marital status was sent to select committee today.

The Sullivan Birth Certificate Bill which requires the Registrar-General to enter the details of Diane Sullivan on the birth certificate of Rowen Sullivan as well as the details of Doreen Margaret Shields as if an adoption order had been made under the Adoption Act 1955.

The bill’s sponsor Louisa Wall said the bill related to the desire of a woman to have her birth mother recorded on her birth certificate.

The bill was set to select committee on a voice vote though NZ First indicated in the debate they would oppose the bill. This was because the birth certificate was correctly written under the law and there was nothing that needed to be fixed.

This was followed by the third reading of the Prohibition of Gang Insignia in Government Premises Bill which was completed by 69 to 51 with National, NZ First, ACT, Peter Dunne and Brendon Horan in favour.

Progress on this last bill was slow with Labour and the Greens calling for personal votes on a number of amendments all of which were defeated.

However as the sitting day drew closer to 10pm and then went past it the number of votes being called for dropped off and voting finally ended at 10.08pm with the House reporting the bill without amendment.
