Gearing Up For Urgency

The Government is preparing the House for a marathon Urgency session with an Order Paper stacked with committee stage debates.

Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee told MPs last week the Government would seek to put the House into Urgency as there were only 11 sitting weeks scheduled before the summer adjournment and a large number of bills the Government wished to make progress on.

On top of the Order Paper are six bills awaiting committee stage readings starting with the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Amendment Bill and the Resource Management Reform Bill.

The six committee stage debates are set to be followed by six bills awaiting their first reading.

Theoretically, the House can sit through to midnight on Saturday. How much progress the Government makes will very much depend on whether the Opposition seeks to delay the committee stage debates.
