51st Parliament to be commissioned

The formal Commission Opening of the 51st Parliament will begin at 11am today.

The Governor-General will send three Royal Commissioners to declare the new Parliament open - the Chief Justice, the Court of Appeal President, and the Chief High Court Judge.

After the Commissioners leave the Chamber the swearing in of MPs will begin in alphabetical order.

The Clerk of the House acting as chairperson will then call for nominations for Speaker. If there is more than one nomination, it will be put to the vote.

The Speaker-Elect then takes the Chair and will respond to congratulations. The House will then adjourn until 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday for the State Opening of Parliament and the Speech from the Throne.
