Labour Surge, Alliance Slump in Latest Poll

Today’s Herald DigiPoll shows Labour surging further ahead to 43.8 per cent, up seven points from National on 35.7 per cent.

The other figures are perhaps even more interesting and potentially significant. The Alliance has tumbled to just five per cent, probably due to the continued rise of New Zealand First in the polls. New Zealand First has more than doubled its support from the last DigiPoll to 5.5 per cent.

Following the Winebox success of party leader Winston Peters it seems that some of the anti-corporate vote that the Alliance attracts has skipped to New Zealand First.

ACT has slipped below the five per cent threshold, making Richard Prebble’s struggle to retain the seat of Wellington Central even more crucial to the survival of the party.

The Greens continue to rise in the polls, returning their highest poll rating of 3.1 per cent since splitting from the Alliance. If party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons wins the seat of Coromandel – which she has a good shot of doing – the Greens would give another four seats to support a change of government.

Labour’s support was strongest in the provincial cities and towns, in Auckland National and Labour were neck and neck, in Wellington Labour was ahead by six per cent and in Christchurch National was ahead by 3.7 per cent.

The poll has a margin of error and was taken between August 28 – a week after the Winebox decision – and last Friday.
