Alliance Leader welcomes Environmental Charter 2002

Alliance Leader Laila Harré has welcomed the release of the Vote for the Environment Environmental Charter 2002.

“The Alliance Party has a commitment to environmental sustainability at the heart of its policies,” said Ms Harré.

Laila Harré said that the commitments called for by the Vote for the Environment coalition were highly consistent with Alliance policies.

She said that the Alliance is going into this election on the strength of its record of wins in the environment area.

“It is only because the Alliance was in government with Labour that we currently have a moratorium on the release of genetically modified organisms. The Alliance is committed to extending that moratorium – and committed to working with Labour in government to make that happen.”

“The areas in which the Labour-Alliance Government scored high marks in the 1999-2002 review were areas led by Alliance Ministers implementing Alliance policy,” she said .

“Stopping logging on the West Coast scored 9/10 from the coalition. Increasing funding for the Department of Conservation 7/10 and maintaining public access to public conservation land and along the coast and waterways 7/10. These were all Alliance policies which we delivered on in the last Government.”

“Voters who want a party in Government strongly promoting environmental protection and sustainability must give their party vote to the Alliance.”
