John Key stands by comments

National Party Finance spokesman John Key says Social Development and Employment Minister Steve Maharey can’t argue with the claim that four out of five households will get nothing from Working For Families, because it’s true.

“Steve Maharey should really check his facts before making claims that I am misleading the New Zealand taxpayer.

“No matter how hard the Labour Government tries to sell its Working For Families package, the reality is that four out of five households will get nothing.

“I stand by that statement, which has previously been accepted by the Finance Minister in Parliamentary questions.

“Steve Maharey is simply trying to pull the wool over workers’ eyes and it won’t wash. Taxpayers see the surplus and they know the tax take has been increasing and they also know they’re not seeing the gains in their wages.

“Mr Maharey can dance on the head of a pin all he likes. I repeat - four out of five households will get nothing from Working For Families. If workers want higher wages, they should vote National,” says Mr Key.
