Police deserve answers on Hawkins
National’s Law and Order spokesman, Tony Ryall, says the men and women of the police deserve to know what is happening with Police Minister George Hawkins.
He is commenting after a report today says Mr Hawkins spoke during the weekend to colleagues and to Helen Clark about resigning.
“Police officers deserve to know if their Minister is interested in sticking with them, or if Helen Clark is putting the skids under him.
“Police officers and the public deserve to know the nature of his ‘chat’ with Helen Clark at the weekend.
“Safety on our streets depends to a large extent on having a police force that is strong and united, but it is very difficult to achieve that when the Minister is in discussions with Helen Clark about his future.
“Mr Hawkins’ diary indicates he is in South Auckland this morning at the Counties-Manukau Police ‘prize-giving’. He would be better off taking a week’s leave so the local police can clear some of their unallocated cases,” Mr Ryall says.
