NZ Day Bill goes to select cttee
United Future leader Peter Dunne said tonight he was pleased with the wide support his New Zealand Day Bill received in the House this evening, enabling it to be sent to the justice and electoral select committee for public consideration.
As a private Member’s Bill, the proposed legislation received support from Labour, National, Act, New Zealand First and United Future allowing it to make progress through Parliament.
Only the Green party voted against the Bill, which proposes changing the name of Waitangi Day to New Zealand Day and Mondayising it in the week in which February 6 falls.
Mr Dunne told Parliament this was just the first step in a long process which he hoped would see New Zealand come to terms with its future as a multi-cultural nation.
