Alexander: Blackball has it right on sex offender
United Future law and order spokesman Marc Alexander today supported the people of Blackball, saying that their reaction to have a sex offender thrust into their midst was the only rational defence of their children that was open to them.
"It might not be pretty, but until the Government finds a way of dealing with these predators other than dumping them into vulnerable communities, and that puts honest our citizens first, then communities will rally to protect themselves and particularly their children.
"These are not people looking for trouble. This is a small New Zealand community that does not want to see its children knowingly put at risk, and that is exactly what has been done here.
"If the Government wants to continue providing a leadership vacuum on this issue, communities will continue to show exactly where they stand - and good on them."
Mr Alexander has long advocated chemical castration for child-sex offenders before they are even considered for release into the community. It has proved successful in cutting reoffending in a number of other countries.
