Labour claims integrated schools' assets
National's Education spokesman, Bill English, says Labour is using a technical breach of accounting rules to claim $35 million worth of education facilities paid for by integrated schools.
"Whatever the technicalities, it's ridiculous for Labour to claim government ownership of playgrounds, classrooms and gymnasiums that were paid for by the Catholic community," says Mr English.
The claim has arisen from an Audit Office ruling that any assets paid for by funds channelled through official school accounts belong to the Government.
"Integrated schools were not aware of this requirement, and they shouldn't have to forfeit assets to this Government because of it," says Mr English.
"I'm sure a sensible solution can be found if everyone stays calm."
