Parliament Has Chance To Fight Youth Crime
New Zealand First Law and Order spokesperson Ron Mark says he's pleased parliament will have the chance to debate his Young Offenders (Serious Crimes) Bill which seeks to introduce tougher penalties for youth offenders who commit serious violent crimes.
Mr Mark's member's bill was drawn from the ballot today and placed on the Order Paper for debate.
“A debate on the issues surrounding the youth justice system and the increase in serious crimes being committed by young offenders is long overdue,” said Mr Mark.
"Young offenders who commit serious crimes should be accountable for their crimes more in the same way as adult offenders. The principle behind this Bill is 'adult punishment' for 'adult crimes'.
"Parliament now has the chance to address the shortfalls of the current youth justice system, which is too lenient towards young offenders who have committed serious and shocking crimes,” said Mr Mark.
