Mark Calls For Report Into Prison Breach

New Zealand First spokesperson for Corrections Ron Mark has called for full investigation into a reported breach of security at Rimutaka Prison.

It is alleged that two prisoners left their cells undetected on Sunday night following a technical problem with the locks, and unbeknown to staff gained access to a guard station. Once there they stole items and made their way back to their cells.

“It is of great concern to me that the breach only came to light on Tuesday,’ said Mr Mark.

“What is also worrying is that this incident occurred in the high security, segregated HM5 and 6 units, and I am given to understand that the technical failure was further compounded by staff shortages and operational failures.

“I shall be seeking answers and a full explanation from the Minister as to precisely what happened, and how this remained undetected for two days.

“Incidents like this raise serious concerns about security measures in our prisons and the way Corrections carry out prison operations,” concluded Mr Mark.
