National offers bipartisan support on Fiji

National Party Leader Don Brash says National is offering support for the position taken by the Government on the developing tensions in Fiji.

"Developments in Fiji are of great concern," says Dr Brash. "The National Party supports the public statements made by both the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs calling on the Fiji military to uphold the rule of law."

"The Government of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase is relatively recently elected through a constitutionally-mandated democratic process. Any attempt by the military to challenge the authority of that government is quite wrong.

"Any action against the Fijian Government would carry serious consequences for that country.

"We join the New Zealand Government in warning against any such action, and calling for proper constitutional authority to be respected."
