Labour backs down on public access
National’s Agriculture spokesman David Carter is pleased the Labour Government has finally listened to reason and backed down on its right to roam plans.
“This is a massive backdown for the Labour Government, which hasn’t come soon enough.
“National has for weeks now been hearing of the backdown and today that’s been confirmed.
“New Zealand farmers could have been saved from all the worry and stress if the Government had listened to National all along and followed the solutions we had indicated.
“Instead Labour opted to spend in excess of $400,000 in taxpayers' money to try and convince farmers to give up their property rights.
“I seriously doubt the Prime Minister or any other Ministers would open their backyards to anyone who wanted to use them – so why would farmers?
“It was a highly unpopular plan right from the start.
“It is good to see that common sense has finally prevailed even though all this angst was unnecessary.”
