Hinton appointed District Court Judge

Lawrence Irwin Hinton, Solicitor of Wellington, has been appointed a District Court Judge, Attorney-General Michael Cullen announced today.

Mr Hinton attended the University of Canterbury where he graduated MA (Hons) LLB (Hons). He also studied subsequently at the University of British Columbia Law School in Vancouver in 1975/76.

Mr Hinton was admitted in 1978 and became a partner of Bell Taylor and Co in Christchurch that year. He later joined Chapman Tripp in Wellington where he was a partner from 1989 until 2005. He is presently a Consultant with Chapman Tripp and Shell in Wellington.

Mr Hinton has extensive general commercial and corporate law expertise, as well as considerable litigation experience. His practice has been wide-ranging with an involvement in a number of significant commercial transactions.

Of part Maori descent, Mr Hinton has broad community interests. These have included residents associations, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Project K (Trustee) and the IHC.

Mr Hinton will be sworn in on 14 December 2007 and will sit in the North Shore.
