Goff congratulates Clark on UN nomination

Labour Leader Phil Goff today congratulated the Rt Hon Helen Clark on her success in being nominated to head the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

“Helen will do a great job. She has the leadership and managerial skills, the integrity and competency and international networks to meet the considerable demands of the job,” Phil Goff said.

“New Zealanders can be proud that a representative of our country is one step away from securing the third highest position at the United Nations. The UN Secretary General’s nomination will now go to the General Assembly for endorsement.

“Helen’s achievements as a Member of Parliament, Minister of the Crown, Opposition Leader and Prime Minister are considerable, but her new role will take her on to a different stage.

“While saddened to see her leave after more than 27 years as a Member of Parliament, the Labour caucus is very proud to see Helen embark on a new career at the United Nations.

“The UNDP’s goals fit perfectly with the values that Helen has promoted throughout her political career. Helen’s drive to help all people build a better life will now be utilised on a global scale.”

The Labour Leader also acknowledged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Government for assisting Helen Clark’s bid for the position.

“It continues the bipartisan approach both parties have followed in promoting competent New Zealanders like Mike Moore and Don McKinnon to high international posts. The bipartisan approach sends the message that all New Zealanders support Helen’s efforts to secure such a senior post at the UN,” Phil Goff said.

“On a personal note I would like to thank Helen for her friendship, advice and support. Helen and I share similar values and have worked closely together within the Labour Party, Parliament, and Government.

“Personally, and on behalf of the Labour caucus, the Labour Party and Labour supporters we wish Helen and Peter all the best for the future and for the challenges ahead in New York,” Phil Goff said.
