National should come clean on tunnel
Melissa Lee needs to tell Mt Albert people whether she supports the Waterview tunnel.
On TVNZ’s Q+A program today Melissa Lee was repeatedly asked to make her position clear on whether she supported a tunnel to connect SH20 to the Northwestern motorway or if she was happy for a six-lane motorway to be built through the heart of Mt Albert.
“The people of Mt Albert want certainty from the National Government. They don’t want evasiveness,” David Shearer says.
“We need to get on with it and build a tunnel to finish linking up Auckland’s roads.
“National’s decision to stop the tunnel and consider demolishing local homes, schools, parks and businesses is creating considerable uncertainty in the local community.
“Melissa Lee had a chance to put that unease to bed today and join with me in supporting a tunnel that won’t split the Mt Albert community apart. She chose not to.
“I am happy to make my position clear: I support the Waterview tunnel and more investment in public transport.”
