All New Zealanders must get their fair share in recovery
The better than expected GDP figures released today serve as a reminder to the National led Government that all Kiwis must share in the recovery, Labour’s Associate Finance spokesperson David Parker said.
“The 0.8 per cent rise in GDP for the December 2009 quarter is better than Treasury’s Half Yearly Economic and Fiscal Update (HYEFU) prediction and is a positive sign of a strong recovery,” David Parker said.
“With growth tracking faster than expected Kiwis should look forward to some relief from the Government’s 2010. The stronger than expected recovery gives the Government more room to move as it prepares for the May 2010 Budget.
“It’s an opportunity for Prime Minister John Key and Finance Minister to ensure that all Kiwis share in the benefits of the recovery.”
However many Kiwis are concerned about how National’s plans to hike GST and tax changes would impact their lives David Parker said.
“Labour MPs spoke to many Kiwis up and down the country on the recent ‘Axe the Tax’ bus tour who are worried that the Government’s plans would make it harder to make ends meet,” David Parker said.
“John Key’s plans to hike GST will benefit very high income earners and offer little to middle and low income Kiwis. How can that be fair?
“Now the economy is showing strong signs of growth National must work to ensure all Kiwis share in it.”
